Dog dental: Is new bloodwork needed for my small dog? How long under?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 4 lbs

Earlier this year she had bloodwork “Total health canine w/ t4 & UA” in April. She’s healthy. She had her yearly exam today & has a bit of tartar on her back teeth. She’ll get a dental done. The vet said nothing about bloodwork prior to it, only to test for heart worm. Should she be okay with no new bloodwork done? Also, how long should the whole procedure take estimately? Her & her mouth are pretty tiny. On average how long would she be under anesthesia? I forgot to ask these questions

Hello. If she only has a bit of tartar on her back teeth, you can certainly put this off until next year & have the bloodwork & dentistry done in April. Depending on the skill of the person doing the dentistry, Precious should only be under anesthesia for a routine cleaning for about 15-20 minutes. If dental x-rays & any extractions are needed, this might stretch things out to an hour or so. If she is not already on heartworm preventative, do the test & start heartworm preventative, but the bloodwork done earlier this year should still be valid if you go ahead with the dentistry now.
