Why won't my dog eat his food? Is he just being picky or sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 14 days old | 45 lbs

Hi... Sawyer will not eat his food. He hasn’t had much of an appetite for about a month now. Sometimes he will eat all of his bowl, but more and more frequently he has started to refuse to eat. I will pour chicken broth over it to try to add flavor. That usually works but the past 2 days he refuses to eat anything. He acts completely normal besides not having an appetite. Does he just not like his food? We feed him Taste of the Wild Puppy- salmon flavor. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
