My dog's eye is red like pink eye. Should I treat it at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 15 years old

For the last 4 days only one eye is red-looks like a human with pink eye-doesn't seem to bother her. Is acting/eating/drinking normally. I inspected it and there is no debris in the eye, slightly more discharge than normal. Was hoping it was just irritated from something and it would clear up. Can I put anything in the eye to wash it out?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. It is possible that it is just irritation that will only be transient but it is hard to know without an evaluation. I highly recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!
