My dog is suddenly anxious, panting, and acting scared. What's wrong?

Hello my name is Zach, and I have a large 95lb pit/lab mix whose roughly 4 years old. Recently in the last week he has started to become extremely paranoid and panting and running around the house with his tail tucked between his legs looking for what seems like ghosts. He usually doesn’t settle down for a few hours and when he does he backs himself up into a corner away from everybody. It’s almost like he’s having anxiety attacks. Nothing seems to settle him down. Thanks

It could be anxiety, signs of pain, fear, etc. I would recommend that you have Zach examined by a vet for a start. A complete physical exam and discussion on recent and previous medical history may help clue the vet into what is going on. Blood work could help uncover internal medical issues. If the vet is concerned about anxiety, then they may try medications or refer you to a veterinary behaviorist (medications often take 6 weeks or longer to kick in). Dog pheromones like Comfort Zone or Adaptil may help. Make sure he is still getting plenty of exercise. Until you see the vet, make sure to keep things calm during these episodes. Don't rush around follow him or try to touch him to calm down. If he has a kennel, you may give that as an option so he feels protected.
