My dog's BUN/CREA is normal, but vet says she has kidney disease.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 5 months old | 10.5 lbs

About 10 days ago, she had her blood work done and was told immediately that her kidney is gone. I got a copy of her results few days ago and it looks like to me that everything is within normal and researched the normal BUN/CREA level. Hers was 16, so I thought that’s still within normal. If can somebody explain to me her results will be appreciated much. Also, yesterday I’ve noticed not sure if it’s her veins or uterus were more pronounced somewhere within the lowest two nipples on her belly.

Hello. I would really need to see the individual results for BUN & Creatinine before interpreting this ratio. You also need to have a urinalysis done. Is your pet sick? Is she vomiting, refusing to eat, losing weight? These are all hallmarks of kidney disease/failure & if she has been acting well for the past 10 days, then she is not in end stage kidney failure. Her absomen looks fine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
