Dog diarrhea: What to do if my dog ate cat poop and changed food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Female | unspayed | 11 years and 11 months old | 9 lbs

My dog has had diarrhea for a few days now. We think sge ate cat poop. We were walking her the other night and she ate something on the ground before we could stop her and the same tonight except i stopped her in time and pulled the poop out of her mouth. There are a few stray cats that hang out in the area around our house and I'm concerned she may get to the poop again. I'm concerned about her getting seriously sick. We switched her food to a lamb and rice formula yesterday. Any advice please?

Diarrhea can be caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Penny for 24 hours and then put the dog on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition to her new food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
