My dog is vomiting after my hospital stay. Is stress making him sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My dog began vomiting yesterday (1 time) and has continued 3 times today. His appetite seems ok and he is drinking water. Just can't keep anything down. This immediately followed a 36 hour stay in the hospital for me during which time he wouldn't eat drink or go out to go potty. Hr did finally go out and potty after about 27 hrs or so but I was very worried about him. Could the current condition be a result ? By the way, his vomit really smells like vomit, which isn't always the case. No diarrhe

It sounds like your absence may have been pretty stressful for him, and its not terribly uncommon for stress to lead to some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) or gastritis (inflammation on the stomach)--so yes, his current condition may be due, at least in part, to your own hospital stay. If he is lethargic, dumpy, etc or is continuing to vomit, please take him to your vet. If he is acting like he feels ok, just not back to 100%, or his appetite is down, its reasonable to offer him a bland diet (boiled chicken/white rice) and give him another day. I hope you yourself are recovering well! Let us know if we can be of further assistance with your little guy. Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

For sure the lack of defecation is a result of the fact that he did not eat properly in the last 3-4 days. I would suggest to feed him with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend another veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
