My indoor cat cries to go outside. How can I make him happy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 12 lbs

Ty is so unhappy. He’s wicked smart, and not amused by toys. He doesn’t play with Sagan, who can make a game from anything, and just wants outside. They aren’t outside cats, but I let them in the backyard for a little bit every few days and he wants it all the time now. They’re forbidden since he killed three lizards. I feel like I should rehome him so he’ll be happier. His crying and pawing at all the doors and windows, then pacing around, breaks my heart. Suggestions?

This is so hard. I think some cats get a taste of outdoors, especially when they start hunting, and they want it all the time. Once they know what is out there, it is very hard to move them back indoors. It is probably worth trying Feliway, which is a pheromone to help with anxiety. If that doesn't work, and you would consider re-homing him to where he can be outside, that is always an option, although obviously a very difficult choice.
