My dog has black poop, diarrhea, and won't eat. Is it urgent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 2 months old | 83 lbs

Hi, lately my german shepherd dog hasn’t been too good. He isn’t eating much anymore, as he went from being a complete scab to not even being interested in food. When he poos his poo is black and yesterday morning he had really bad diarrhoea. He’s on like 3 different types of tablets but he’s been on these tablets for awhile and these things haven’t happened. thank you

Black poo is very alarming as it may be a sign of intestinal or gastric bleeding. This could be caused by a gastric ulcer, intestinal injury, bleeding in the respiratory tract (and swallowing the blood), cancer, etc. This is an emergency and you will need to take Tyson Siu to your veterinarian for an exam today. Your vet will want to do blood tests and possibly an x-ray to rule out several diseases.
