My dog has bloody diarrhea & vomiting but acts fine. What did she eat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 7.5 lbs

My dog has been having on and off diharrea for 2 days and just a half hour ago she had it again but this time it was bloody. She also threw up two days ago and again around 530 this am. Otherwise she is acting completely normal. Is it something she ate?

It could be something Scarlett ate causing her to vomit and have diarrhea, and the diarrhea could cause irritation to the GI tract leading to the blood. If she isn't fully vaccinated, it could be she has a serious illness such as parvovirus. Given that she has been having diarrhea and vomiting, and now there is blood in her diarrhea, it's time to see a vet. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Oh my. It is very unusual for a pet to have diarrhea and vomiting blood to go right back to normal health this quickly. I would still have Jace checked by the veterinarian to make sure everything is really ok. Pets can go through a period of waxing and waning symptoms where they are sick then they are fine, then they are sick again. Some possible causes for the symptoms are: stomach ulcer, esophagitis due to excessive vomiting, coagulopathy (clotting disorder), and severe gastroenteritis. You also have the option of waiting and seeing if he really does remain stable. You can offer a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese and small amounts of Pedialyte (non-flavored) for a few days to see if things stay well with Jace.

I am sorry Paisley is not feeling well. It is possible that she has an upset stomach. You can try to give her an over the counter probiotic with a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for about 24 hours. After the 24 hours you can return to her normal dog food. However if she continues to vomit, is lethargic or has blood in her stool I recommend taking her to the vet. It is possible it is a mild case of gastroenteritis however parasites, viral/bacterial infections, foregin obstruction and diseases like pancreaitits can cause vomiting and diarrhea. When bright red blood is in the diarrhea that is from inflammation and sometimes will need antibiotics to resolve. Hope that helps and Paisley feels better soon.

Poor Mocha! I definitely agree that there is some blood in that one picture. Since there is blood present and since he is so young, I would have him seen soon. I worry that if there is a GI bleed it could get worse if not addressed soon. There are several causes of this from parvo, parasites, eating something he shouldn't, toxins, bacterial infections, and much more. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better.
