My puppy has a swollen, painless bump on her paw. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 6 months and 21 days old | 26 lbs

I found a bump on my puppy’s paw this morning. I can’t tell if it is a scab from a cut or if it is something else. It doesn’t hurt her when I push on it or try and touch it, and she has been acting fine. The area around it is slightly swollen. I am just wondering if she is okay or if this is something I should worry about.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This lump could be something like an abscess for example. I think that is more likely than being a growth given her age though a growth cannot be completely ruled out. However, other things are possible. I recommend that you have Luna evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If an abscess was noted, further local therapy with drainage and antibiotics would be recommended. Good luck and best wishes!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This could be a little infection from a thorn, a big bite, or something else. Try applying a warm wet cloth to the area for 5 minutes 2-3 times daily. I do expect that little white center to open and drain so this would be normal. If no improvement in 2 days, or if worsening in any way, it’s time to see the vet. Best wishes to you and Luna!
