My puppy had shots. Am I over-vaccinating if I get 16-week shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a puppy that was given 5in1 vaccination at 6 weeks. He received next set at 9 and 12 weeks. After reading about over vaccinating pets I'm debating about going in for his 16 week shots. What do I need to do?

The first set of vaccinations at 6 weeks only works if there are no maternal antibodies left in the puppy. Since this varies, there is a possibility that there were some left and destroyed the vaccine. The reason we give it is that the puppy would be protected in case there were no maternal antibodies left. That said it is much much safer to assume that maybe the first set did not work and vaccinate your dog at 16 weeks again. This then is guaranteed protection against distemper, parvo, infectious hepatitis, etc. So I strongly suggest you finish the core vaccinations at 16 weeks.
