Why are my dog's nails bleeding after being cut too short at the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

early last month jez got a large cut on her arm and it had to be stitched under sedation. during the surgery, they cut her nails. idk if they were trying to do us a “favor” or what, but whoever did them did a horrible job- they cut all the way to the quick on almost all of them and since then they’ve been chipping/ragged and bleeding all the time. even the cuticle is cut up. why would they do this to her?! the cut was on her arm, not a location she could scratch, so it wasn’t for her safety.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jezebel. Most hospitals will trim a patient's nails under anesthesia. It is a stess free time to have it done. I am sorry to hear that hers was not done well. I would alert her veterinarian to the problem to see if the nails can be fixed or if there is another reason for the change in her nails. There are rare skin diseases that can affect a patient's nails. I hope this information helps!
