My dog barks at people on walks. How do I stop this intimidating behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 4 months old

My rescue dog, Angel, is a very sweet loveable dog, but she has a habit of barking at people who approach us when we go on walks. It is normally when we stand in one place for too long, but tonight she barked at our neighbors as they were coming home from work and we were going inside our house. She is large and black, so she is very intimidating when she does this. How can I prevent her from barking at people and making us the outcasts with the scary dogs?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! They are adorable! Usually these behaviors can be corrected but this usually requires in person training by a qualified dog trainer. I recommend you consider hiring a qualified dog trainer to work with you in person. Good luck and have a good night!
