My cat vomits whole food often. Is it behavioral or medical?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 13 lbs

I have a six year old male cat 13pds.Hes healthy and has had no weight loss. Lots of personality and talks alot. Scooter vomits ALOT, there are times when its been 3/4 times in a day, to once a day for wks. He also stops vomiting all together for wks. Its usually regurgitated food thats whole. I have tried everything, putting food on a plate, buying food for sensitive stomach ect. Can a cat puke because they haven't got there way, like a child having a tantrum? I've witnessed it. What can I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Vomiting or regurgitation can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. Cats do not vomit from not getting their way. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. Treatment would be based on the findings. Good luck and have a great day!
