My cat's bite wound has an abscess after vet treatment. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

My cat got into a catfight and was bitten. The wound was flushed out by the vet, and he was injected with antibiotics. This was approximately 24 hours ago. I was petting my cat and looking at the wound and I can see that a small abscess has indeed formed at the site of the injury. It is raised approx. a quarter inch, and is about the same diameter as a penny. Is this normal during the initial healing process? Should I just keep an eye on it and let the antibiotics do their job? Or go see the vet

You can definitely give it a few days as antibiotics can take 2-3 days to fully kick in, if an abscess has formed the healing process will probably be a little longer. in some cases antibiotics are not enough and the abscess might need to be lanced and cleaned in order for it to heal properly, you should probably reassess the situation in a couple days.
