My dog has a neck wound, but isn't scratching. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered

My dad is helping a stray dog, he bathe him and has given him the heartworm and fleas and ticks meds, but hasn’t taken him to the vet yet. The dog is out during the day and he lets him sleep indoors. The dog looks happier than ever. But today he sent me these photos worried. The wound is located around his neck. The dog is not scratching the area or feels itchy. He will take the dog tomorrow to the vet, but wanted to know if this could be an emergency? The first photo shows before he bathe him.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Bruce. The photos you’ve attached are very helpful. The wound looks like it has a white pus like discharge, suggesting that it could be infected. I would recommend having Bruce evaluated by a veterinarian today so that the wound can be cleaned out thoroughly and closed. The veterinarian can also prescribe a course of antibiotics. Hope this helps, good luck!
