My puppy isn't eating his food like he used to. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 9 months and 6 days old

Jasper usually goes crazy for his food, but the past few days he's been not eating it all/leaving it alone completely. We feed him twice a day, once at 11:30 and then once again at 7:30. He wasn't eating his dinner today so I sat next to him while he ate it, continuing to encourage him and hand feeding him at times. He ate half the bowl. What could be causing this?

There could be a number of reasons for Jasper's decline in appetite, as it is a non-specific sign of many illnesses such as dental problems, systemic illness, infection, or injury to name a few. It is concerning that a puppy, especially a Golden Retriever, isn't eating all of his food. Given that this has been going on for a couple of days, I'd take him into the vet first thing Monday for a check up. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
