My puppy is sick, not eating, diarrhea, no vet is open. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | unspayed | 1 month old

My 41/2 week old puppy has suddenly stopped eating and drinking. She has became very weak, feels burning hot to the touch, has diarrhea, and is shaking all over. I am in the disaster area for hurricane Michael and there is no vet open. Is there anything I can do to help her.

It sounds like she has a severe fever, most likely from gastroenteritis. Maintaining her hydration levels with electrolyte solutions (gatorade or a salt and sugar solution) can help and some probiotics such as live yoghurt may also help bowel recovery. Unfortunately with the vomiting, injectable medications may be required in order to stabilise her condition until her appetite returns, bland food such as boiled rice, eggs, chicken, fish and pumpkin can help
