My dog has bloody diarrhea after vaccines. Is this a side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 11 months old | 8 lbs

My dog started having diarrhea this morning then had his annual pet exam. He received several vaccines today. He continues with diarrhea but now has blood in it. Would the vaccines cause that?

No vaccines will not cause blood in the diarrhea. Sometimes the GI tract can be so irritated from the diarrhea that it bleeds, thus creating the blood in the stool. Keep an eye on Ponch for now. If this diarrhea continues over the next two days, the blood is still present, he stops eating, he stops drinking, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic, I would take him back into the vet right away. Best of luck.
