My rabbits poop outside their cage. How do I get them to use a litter?

I was wondering how do I get my rabbits to poop in her cage again? About 4 months ago we decided to let them out during the night till morning so they can have time out and my other rabbit kept biting her cage so that is one reason why we decided to let them out. They have a playpen we have made for them and they now poop outside of there cages in the same corner everyday. They use to poop in there cages and now they think outside in there playpen is where they should poop. Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 4 lbs

Thank you for your question about Hazel. What you’re describing is very common, and often occurs when rabbits are in a larger space. Since rabbits go to the bathroom so often, they will utilize many spaces as a litter box. One thing you can try is to put a litter box in the area where she is going to the bathroom in the play pen. You can put some of the fecal pellets in the litter box as well. For litter, I would recommend using recycled newspaper pelleted litter or recycled paper pulp bedding. Sometimes they will end up laying in their litter boxes - if this occurs, you can provide them with two litter boxes which often helps.
