Is my neutered dog's frequent penis erection normal or a problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 16 lbs

My pups penis erects about 2-3 inches from the sheath. This happens a few times a week. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, he just sits to one side kind of in an odd position. He doesn't even really lick himself. I get him up to walk around and he's fine. Can you tell me what causes this/if it is a problem? He is a year old neutered longhaired dachshund mix. (16 LBS). I rescued him a month ago, so I do not know his history. Thank you, Sherry Hart shrryhrt gmail.com

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Brady. Congratulations on adopting him! The signs you are describing typically occur in young dogs even if they have been neutered. It tends to happen with excitement and is not problematic for the dog. It does not indicate sexual arousal if the dog has been neutered. It is only problematic if the penis is unable to fully retract within the prepuce. I hope this information helps!
