Why does my cat meow with an open mouth and wait for me to respond?

So I've noticed my cat when he meows at me and just me he hang his mouth and stare at me till i reply in some form. Then he closes his mouth. He only does this to me and when he tring to get attention. I assumeing it a behavior thing as he otherwise as normal as a cat can be? What would be a reason or is my cat insane? He's lovely :-) From an evolutionary perspective cats only learnt to meow when they started to associate with humans, they recognised that we responded well to it. I imagine he is just looking for you to give him attention. As long as he seems happy and healthy I wouldn't be concerned about him.
