My anxious dog destroys, barks, and runs. What helps her settle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 11 lbs

My dog Kiki, is showing traits of anxiety. She is nearly 2 yrs old and she is a rescue. Anytime, we leave the house she destroys anything insight. Out walking, if she is left off the lead, lately she might see or hear a bird and she will head for the hills. if someone is at the door, she will bark the house down too and there is no shutting her up. Does she need training or is there something we can do to help her setttle? Do the diffusers work?

I'd definitely recommend a training class together just to help instill some good behaviors and learn to communicate a bit better. Training can help with leash manners as well as some socialization. At home, keeping her in an area where she can't destroy stuff when left alone (such as with a crate or in a laundry room) and using a pheromone diffuser can definitely help. If she seems incredibly anxious, talking with your vet about anxiety medication can help, as well as potentially speaking to a veterinary behaviorist that can working on a training plan in addition to medication.
