My puppy hit her leg and is limping. What should I do to help her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 months and 4 days old

My puppy was outside running around like crazy today, as puppies do, and she hit her front right leg on a metal pole and cried out in pain. At first, she wouldn't put any pressure on her paw. Now she will walk around but is still limping. I have put some ice on her leg. I wanted to find out which ligament was sore by lightly pressing softly on her leg from the toes up, but she didn't jerk away. I think she is in pain but I don't think it is broken. I don't know what to do or how to help her.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zoey! I would hope that it just a strain or a sprain or a bone bruise. I would strictly rest her which means: no running/jumping, playing with other dogs, running up and down stairs, jumping on and off furniture, leash walks only and crating so not running in the house. Please do not give any human pain medications. If she isn't better by Friday she should be checked by your vet as she is a young puppy and they can get hairline fracture or growth plat injuries that can present as subtle lamenesses. The vet can prescribe safe dog appropriate pain medications. If the limp worsens before then I would have her seen sooner. Good luck!

Oh no, poor Khloe! I would rest her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
