My cat has diarrhea for weeks, eating well. Is a vet visit needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 9.5 lbs

My car has had diarrhea for over 3 weeks now, his appetite is great, drinking water, going to the bathroom plenty. I can't figure it out nothing changed in his diet. My other car isn't sick at all, do I need to bring him in? I've tried the over the counter meds and they make it worse. Nothing makes it better.

Diarrhea can be due to intestinal parasites, bacterial overgrowth or can be related to food sensitivities. I definitely think you need to see a vet if the diarrhea has been present for three weeks. They can check a stool sample and may be able to prescribe medications that could help depending on the cause.

I would have Sammye seen by a vet, as it's not normal to have diarrhea for weeks at a time. This diarrhea could be caused by intestinal parasites, dietary sensitivity, exposure to toxins, irritable bowel disease, or even cancer. The vet can examine him, run blood tests and a urinalysis, check his feces (bring a stool sample along with you), and possibly x-rays to diagnose what is causing his diarrhea so he can be treated. I would have Sammye seen by a vet first thing in the morning.

Runny stools are never a normal thing, as it has been going on for a long period of time i strongly advise taking him to the vet in order to get it checked, he might be suffering from a gastrointestinal infection that requires antibiotic treatment.
