Rescued cat with broken pelvis hasn't pooped in 4 days. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 1 year and 9 months old | 4.5 lbs

Hello, I rescued a cat off the side of the road that was hit by a car. She is a year or two old. I took her to a hospital and they said she has a broken pelvis and jaw. She has been eating special recovery food mixed with water for 3 days now and I have had her for 4 days total. She is able to urinate without issues but she has not defacated for the time she has been with me. I want to know what I should do.. give an enema, stool softener, see a vet or something else. Please help if you can TY

Hello. First, thank you for rescuing this cat. You are a true hero. I would definitely contact your veterinarian about the lack of defecation in this kitty. With a broken pelvis it can be very painful for her to position herself & pass stool through the damaged area. She may need to be on stronger pain medication & also receive a stool softener to help while the pelvis heals. I would not administer an enema unless your veterinarian recommends one. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
