My dogs are pooping blood. What can I do until I can afford a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 10 months old | 85 lbs

Both my dogs started pooping blood this morning. Mollie is 6 now and 85 lbs . Gracie is 16. They do a regular color then blood color poo and red blood. I am doing debit consolidation and can't afford the vet. Working on it but not there yet. So need to know what this might be and what I should be doing until I get full amount for vet. These girls are my world. Thank you

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mollie and Gracie! The fact BOTH dogs have blood in the stool makes me think it is either a viral or bacterial infection, intestinal parasites or something diet related (new food or treat or people food). Blood indicates inflammation in the colon. If they are having severe diarrhea then fast them for 12-24 hours. Water is okay as long as they are not vomiting. Then resume feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If they do not improve, worsen or start vomiting they should see a Vet. Good luck!
