My Dachshund is stiff, shaking, and avoiding stairs. Is it back pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 1 month old | 16 lbs

Hi, my dog has become stiff, is shaking a bit, and reluctant to go down and up stairs. He did have a previous situation where a chicken bone got stuck in his organs and suffered these same symptoms, but recovered quickly. He is suffering the same thing again but is a bit better than that incident. His name is Brownie and he is around 11 years old as a daushand dog (wiener dog). I was just wondering what may be wrong? We did accidentally feed him pieces of meat and onion a few days ago.

I’m sorry to hear that Brownie isn’t feeling well. His reluctance to go down the stairs, trembling, stiffness and simply being a Dachshund make me suspicious that he may be experiencing back and/or neck pain. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is one of the more common causes of back pain in dogs, and occurs when the disc material between the vertebrae push down onto the spinal cord. At this point, your best option is to take Brownie to his vet for evaluation. He may need diagnostic testing and pain medication. Until you can take him to the vet, restrict his activity by avoiding any running, jumping or playing, and ideally confining him to a crate or small room. Do not give him any pain medication (including aspirin) at home, as many over the counter medications are toxic to dogs and may interfere with the safer and more effective options that your vet can prescribe. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
