Why is my dog suddenly quiet, sad, and not eating? Is she sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 11 years and 8 months old | 44 lbs

I was just wondering about my dog’s sudden quietness. She also hasn’t been eating or drinking much and seems quite sad although nothing traumatic has happened. I’m not sure if she has an illness or has behavioural issues.

Often small behavioral changes and alterations in appetite are the first symptoms that dogs and cats show us when they are ill. This is especially true in older animals such as Fluffy. Depending on how long it has been going on, I would strongly encourage you to schedule a visit with the vet for Fluffy to get an exam and most likely some blood work. They will want to rule out some common illnesses affecting older dogs so that they can be treated accordingly if needed. This does not sound like an emergency so definitely not need to run out now.
