Could my senior cat's foul gas be a sign of kidney problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 years old | 24.25 lbs

Hi. My 11 year old cat, Max, has recently been passing some very foul gas. It is extremely bad and it was a sudden onset. He has has kidney problems since he was a kitten. He had a bladder infection and stones. The stones eventually got stuck... and he had to be castrated. I am worried that the passing of gas could be related to kidney failure. My one cat just got sick one day and had to be put down 3 days later due to acute kidney failure. I soon realised that she too had very foul gas.

Hi there. Foul gas can be due to a number of causes, usually more ones in the GI tract causing poor digestion, but occasional issues in other parts of the body can cause the issue as well. I would recommend having Max examined by your vet and have some blood work done to make sure everything is okay. It's peace of mind for you and best to have him checked at the first sign of something abnormal going on. I hope that helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
