Why is my dog bleeding late in her heat cycle with a swollen vulva?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 12 lbs

My female dog started her heat 3 weeks ago but didnt bleed much at all.now the bleeding started and her vulva is swollen was it a silent heat .im worried its now day 21 and i noticed some blood on her sheets she sleeps on at night.she is sleeping alot but eating normally.

If you are confident Katie was in heat three weeks ago and there is a large amount of vulvar discharge I’d be concerned that the bleeding might be from a uterine infection or pyometra. If it’s a small amount of discharge it’s possible that she’s having a longer than usual heat cycle. Your vet would be able to determine whether or not she is still in heat with a physical exam and vaginal cytology to look at the cells in the vagina. I’d recommend making an appointment to see your vet if the bleeding continues.
