My cat is lethargic and can't meow, but still purrs. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 8 months old

My cat (american short hair tabby) hasn't been able to meow since yesterday afternoon. He tries but nothing comes out. He's acting a bit lethargic today but had normal energy yesterday. He is still purring too. He is eating normally and going to the bathroom as normal.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mardi. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. If he is still eating and drinking, it should be fine to wait until Monday. However, if he becomes more lethargic or stops eating, the he will need to see an emergency veterinarian. If he retches or acts like something is stuck in his throat, then I would also have him seen right away. Otherwise, he may have a respiratory tract infection or even significant inflammation within his throat that has affected his ability to vocalize normally. His veterinarian will do a thorough examination and possibly prescribe an antibiotic if an infection is suspected. If not, then diagnostic testing may be recommended. I hope this information helps!
