My cat is lethargic and can't meow, but still purrs. What should I do?

My cat (american short hair tabby) hasn't been able to meow since yesterday afternoon. He tries but nothing comes out. He's acting a bit lethargic today but had normal energy yesterday. He is still purring too. He is eating normally and going to the bathroom as normal. Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 8 months old

However, if he becomes more lethargic or stops eating, the he will need to see an emergency veterinarian. If he retches or acts like something is stuck in his throat, then I would also have him seen right away. Otherwise, he may have a respiratory tract infection or even significant inflammation within his throat that has affected his ability to vocalize normally.
