My dog reverse sneezes after waking. What can I do before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 98 lbs

My 6 yr old Labrador retriever just started having reverse sneezing fits. It only happens when he wakes up in the morning or after napping. It has been going on for 3 days. Is there anything I can do before having to take him to the vet?

Thanks for using PetCoach. In some cases reverse sneeze may be due to allergies. You could give Willard a dose of Benedryl to see if it helps. I recommend consulting with his vet for the appropriate dose. https://www.petcoach.co/pet-medication/benadryl/ If it does not help or he has any other signs of illness I recommend a vet visit for Willard.
