Why are my cat's third eyelids always out? When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years and 5 months old | 13 lbs

for about a week i’ve been noticing Mr. C’s third eyelids of both eyes are out when they arent supposed to be. they seems to retract occasionally but for the most part they’re just always out. otherwise he seems perfectly fine, he’s eating and playing and grooming. we JUST had him to the vet a couple weeks ago for shots and checkup and they didn’t find anything wrong with him. i really can’t afford to take him back but i’m worried he might be in pain/discomfort and not showing it. thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mr. C. Other than his third eyelids being elevated, the eyes appear normal in the picture. His pupils are a normal and equal size. I do not see any redness in the eyes or discharge present. It sounds like he is acting well at home. If his attitude or appetite changes or if he begins squinting or pawing at the eyes, then I would be concerned. In this case, he will need to see his veterinarian again. Otherwise, it should be fine to monitor him at home. I hope this information helps!
