Dog's pyometra incision swollen & painful after surgery: What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 13 lbs

Does this incesion look normal? 2 1/2 days after open pyonmetra surgery. A tiny amount of discharge is coming out but just barely. Has been eating and drinking but has not pooped yet. She refuses to stand up for long and tries to lay down as fast as possible. :(

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The incision itself looks quite swollen though if you make sure that she does not lick or chews at it, it may heal. However, I am concerned that based on your description, she may be painful or uncomfortable. I think for that reason, a recheck examination with your veterinarian is warranted. Good luck and have a great day!
