Why is my dog's discharge brown after spay surgery? Is it healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 47 lbs

My pitbull mix Harley has been having green discharge from her vulva for about 4 days (she was spayed 11 days ago). We took her the the vet and they proscribed 10 more days worth of amoxicillin 250mg (she takes 2 a day). Her discharge today is still slightly green but more Brown now, does that mean it’s drying/clearing up? Or could it mean something else? She’s scheduled to go to the vet Monday ( they are closed Saturday and Sunday).

I would not be concerned about this change in discharge. Usually a brownish discharge indicates old blood/bleeding. If she is otherwise acting normal just continue giving her the medication as prescribed and keep your recheck appointment for Monday.
