My cat is overweight despite diet and exercise. What else can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bengal | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 14 lbs

My 4 year old Bengal has recently put on weight. We have eliminated ALL treats and now he only gets no grain pet food but we feed him as much as he wants. He has a cat wheel and we walk him multiple times a day on a leash. We play with him too and run him up and down the stairs. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi there. It sounds like you're doing a great job of getting Loki to exercise, so kudos for that - this can be challenging with cats! If he's still not losing any weight in spite of this, then it's likely that you'll have to start measuring his daily food intake and cutting this back a bit also. I normally have owners measure how much their cat is currently eating per day, then start by reducing this amount by 10%. Check weight in a month - if losing, then great! If not, cut back by another 10%. And so on. Another option would be to switch him to a prescription weight loss diet such as Hills Metabolic, and follow the feeding instructions on the bag for his target weight.
