Why is my puppy vomiting, not drinking water, and has hard stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | unspayed | 20.8 lbs

Hi, My puppy is throwing up since Saturday night; she eats but a few hours later will vomit. Barely touches her water but will drink goat's milk formula and doesn't want to even touch broth we put out for her. She had a bowel movement which looked normal albeit dark and very hard.

Throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, and sometimes an intestinal blockage. etc.  I would fast Shelby for 12 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if she gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on. If Shelby has not had a full course of vaccinations yet, you may want to take her to a vet right away as canine parvovirus looms everywhere and she may just be at the beginning of a parvo infection.
