My dog's high liver enzymes: Is Belamyl injection the right treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 26 days old

My dog has 284 alkaline phosphatase, 0.18 direct bilirubin, 71 SGOT. The vet has prescribed Belamyl injections(vitamin B complex and liver extracts). Is that fine?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Is Luna sick or acting fine. Vitamin is a safe vitamin and any excess will be excreted in her urine. I think the injection is fine. You can also discuss Milk thistle and Denamarin with your Vet. Denamarin is a liver support medication with anti-oxidants that can help the liver. Also sometimes I put the dogs on a month course of antibiotics (amoxicillin and metonidazole). I would have her liver enzymes rechecked in 1 month to see if they improved. If they increased I would have a bile acid test done to check for a liver shunt. Then an ultrasound of her belly. I wish you the best!

Her ALP is elevated. This could be because she is still a puppy, possibly not drinking enough water, but also some liver or bone condition. The medications and supplemenst prescribed will support liver function and are beneficial for your dog. Have the liver values rechecked by your veterinarian in 2 months. They should have improved by then.
