My dog had blood in stool and weird poop. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alaskan Malamute | Female | spayed | 12 years old | 32 lbs

My dog had blood in stool a few weeks ago. And it changed to black with orange inside. Then yellow and slimey. Gave her worm pill. Then her poop was normal and kinda yellow with what looked like rice.. But could have been because I gave her chicken and rice the night before. Now she seems fine, back to her normal self. Now Poop is normal brown and little yellow inside... What should I do?

If you are concerned I would bring a fresh stool sample to your veterinarian to check for intestinal parasites, dogs can have coccidia or giardia causing blood and mucus in the stool, and the rice like things you saw may have been tapeworm segments. The over the counter dewormers do not take care of these less common intestinal parasites. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Mocha.
