My cat meows loudly in the litter box. Is it a health concern?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 13 lbs

My male cat is about 3 years old and loudly meows when he is using the litter box. Should I be concerned or is it just something cute he is doing?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Abnormal behavior while urinating can be a sign of a serious condition such as urethral blockage or bladder stones. This condition, if allowed to progress, can even be life threatening. I recommend having Cornelius seen by a vet as soon as possible - he should be seen right away if he has blood in his urine, begins urinating in abnormal areas, or you note that he is straining to urinate (leaves only small amounts of urine after spending longer in the litter box). I hope all is well with Cornelius!
