Why is my puppy's one ear up and one ear down? Is it normal?

Hi there! So I have a six month old lab basset hound pit bull mix and for quite awhile she's had one ear up and one is that is always down it even stays that way when she is asleep. Should I be concerned?

Oh my, Gemma is beyond adorable! It could be there is a problem with her ear such as an ear infection causing one to be down. I wouldn't be concerned about it, but it is something that I would have checked out by a vet. If she does have an ear infection, the vet can diagnose the cause of it (ear mites, yeast, bacteria), and can treat her for it. If she doesn't have an ear infection, it may be her ears are naturally like that, which would be so cute! I'd make an appointment for her with the vet on Monday. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Sometimes this can be contributed to developmental factors and the cartilage in the ear becomes more firm in a particular position. Sometimes an ear infection can cause an ear to lay differently then the other. I would recommend having Lily's ears examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! That could be completely normal, but sometimes (not very often I have to admit) is related to ear infection/inflammation. If you see any signs of possible inflammation (head shaking, scratching, discharge from ear, redness of skin..) then a check up is needed, otherwise I would consider it normal. Hi doc I got a lab puppy around 5 months back....he had floppy ears then....when he ws 4 months his ears went erect....but with time one of the ear fell down....and now he has one ear erect...how can i help that? Regards
Your pet has a cartilage defect, this cannot be helped unfortunately. Cartilage cannot be bent or repaired like bone, because of how it is made. However there is no real danger to your pet as this is purely cosmetic, so I would not be too concerned about it. You will just have to accept that your pet has a cosmetic difference that gives him character and love him all the same.

Why my puppy one ear banding back
If you are trying to say that your puppy has 1 ear that is folded backwards, then this likely is a cartilage defect of the ear pinna. There really isn't anything you can do about this since cartilage has a very low blood supply and cannot be casted or molded into the desired shape. Daisy will just have to be loved for her special backwards facing ear. This shouldn't cause her any pain or subject her to any complications later on in life, so no worries there.

Hello, my 10 month old 9 pound chocolate pomeranian was groomed last week and for the past several days has been keeping his ear down. He hasn't shown any of the signs I've read about for an ear infection, but I'm concerned it could be getting worse
I would get it checked to make sure there isn't something going on. If his ears were plucked at the groomer it may have irritated his ear canal and that could make him hold his ear down rather than up if he feels he needs to protect it.

My labradoodle has a droopy ear and is shaking her head as if it is irritating her. Is there anything I can give her to help?
If the ear is droopy and she is shaking her head she probably has an ear infection. Because of the head shaking and probably scratching as well, blood vessels in the ear are exploding, causing blood and fluids to fill the pinea ans swell. This condition is called "ear hematoma" and needs medical or surgical treatment. The ear infection needs to be treated as well as it is the primary cause, usually ear drops from the vet will solve this, in some cases systemic antibiotics are prescribed as well. Regarding the the droopy ear I personally prefer the medical treatment (steroids for 4 weeks) over the surgical one, unfortunately most vets will still opt for the surgery.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your puppy! Unfortunately in many dogs we can have changes in the carraige of the ears as they grow/mature. In some breeds, such as german shepherds, the ears will be taped by a vet or experienced dog breeder in an attempt to get them to stand in a certain manner, but this is not a gaurantee of the altering of the ear carraige. If you are not planning on showing your dog, I would accept her for ear sweet self and learn to love her funny ears (and they may continue to change as she grows). I myself have a lab mix with ears that do not match in their carriage. It gives them character!

My dog is a 2 year old Chihuahua mix. Her ears have always stood up, all of the sudden on ear has dropped and won't go back up. Should I worry?
It is possible that the dropped ear can be a sign of an ear infection, and that's always important to check out. If Cali's ear is still dropped in the morning, then I would make an appointment with the vet to have it checked out.

My dogs ears have been up for quite some time now, following an injury to his left ear (being bit by another dog). The cone helped that happen. This week, however, I have noticed that that same ear has been somewhat flopping. Should I be concerned?
Well Marshall is about the cutest thing I have seen in awhile! If the injury on his ear caused a lot of build up of scar tissue, this could weigh down the ear a bit. Or if there is a build of fluid you may see the same result. I would recommend to have your vet do an exam to ensure there is nothing that needs to be done to help intervene. Either way, he is truly adorable with those big brown eyes.

My dog is having pain from his ear and faces sude ways with one ear up. Looks like something is bothering him. what could be botheringn his ear.
We will very commonly see ear infections in dogs. The infection is most commonly due to an overgrowth of normal yeast and bacteria in the ear. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Jax. They will be able to examine into the ear and take a sample of any discharge to evaluate under the microscope to determine if there is anything abnormal going on then determine the best treatment for him.
