Puppy throwing up, diarrhea, not eating after new food. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 months and 15 days old | 17.5 lbs

My puppy started throwing up at 2AM yesterday and proceeded to vomit until about 11 AM. He wouldn’t eat during that time span, but now he wants to eat everything. We withheld food from him and now he has diarrhea which was around 9 PM. He was farting a lot, but no more bowel movements. We recently transitioned to Hills Science Diet(over the course of 1 1/2 week)He has only had his second set of boosters and is due for heartworm medicine in about 5 days. I’m really not too sure as of what to do.

Poor Theo! Vomiting and soft faces are signs referring to a gastrointestinal problem. It could be due to dietary indiscretion (he picked up something in the garden), parasitic infestation (frequent in puppies), bacterial diseases or viral diseases (i.e.: parvovirus, unlikely if fully vaccinated). He is active, that's a good sign but continue to monitor him and provide bland food (boiled breast chicken and rice) for a couple of days divided in SMALL meals 3-4 times a day. If he continues to vomit or having diarrhea might get dehydrated so, if he restart vomiting or get lethargic, I would suggest to have him checked by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Good luck and post again on the forum if you need further advices. I hope my answer was helpful.
