Senior dog is vomiting and won't eat after pyometra spay. What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 12 years and 8 months old | 9 lbs

My 12 year old shih tzu just got spayed due to bad open pyometra 4 days ago and and she was doing great the day after then the second day on she has been vomiting non stop and refuses to eat. Her gait is wobbly and unbalanced. Been back to vet twice he gave her fluids and steroids and he also said er heart and teeth are bad. I tried pureeing her food. Im at a losing battle. This is my baby. Im fighting so hard for her and i feel like shes giving up. What else can i do.

I'm so sorry Laney is so sick! Unfortunately a pyometra is an extremely serious infection and it does make a dog very sick. Sometimes even with surgical and medical treatment, the dog is so sick that it cannot survive, but I certainly hope that isn't the case with Laney! You are doing the right thing by taking her back into the vet for more treatment, and it may be a good idea to have her hospitalized with the vet. If she is with the vet full time, she can have constant monitoring and they may be able to try medications that stimulate her appetite. I can tell you are fighting for her, and I would speak with your vet to see if they feel hospitalizing her is the best option. Give her lots of love as well, which I'm sure you are doing. I'd give the vet a call now. Again, I'm sorry she is so sick!

Poor Layla! While it's normal for a dog to be more lethargic than usual, vomiting usually is not. But it could also be any medications she is on causing the vomiting as drugs like antibiotics cause GI upset. I would give her vet a call in the morning to let them know you are seeing these problems, and they will advise you if they want you to bring her in. I hope this helps.

I am sorry you are having so much trouble with Layla. Since she is not eating or drinking for you, her hydration is a concern. If she is no longer vomiting, you can try Pedialyte or Gatorade or chicken broth for her to help maintain her hydration until your vet opens. I am sure they will check her incision and temperature and possibly do blood work or x rays to find out what is going and if it is related to her surgery or not. Anesthesia can cause nausea and change in stool for 24 hours but she should not have any lasting affects from that at this point.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Skye. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. It doesn't sound like she is doing well after her surgery. I worry that she will become dehydrated from not eating properly. She may requires some fluids under her skin to help rehydrate her. Additional pain medication may also need to be prescribed. If she is nauseous and this is affecting her appetite, anti-nausea medication can be given. The initial doses of her antibiotics can be given by injection to get those medications started. Once she is feeling better, then it should be easier to give her these medications. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. Lola is extremely sick. I see that she is unspayed, and her symptoms could be caused by a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. You have to take her into a vet immediately.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Pia! I think it is time for a recheck and some testing. I recommend belly X-rays and blood work. I am always concerned for an infected uterus in any sick intact female dog and believe that has to be rule out first. A pyometra (infected uterus) is a surgical emergency. There are many causes for lethargy, anorexia and vomiting: infected uterus, kidney or liver failure, foreign body (ate something that is stuck and needs surgery to remove), cancer, pancreatitis, other sources of infection or inflammation. I am assuming you have tried delicious things to entice her to eat. If you haven't try some boiled chicken or hamburger with rice, canned dog food or the meat flavored baby foods. I think it is important to recheck and try to get to the bottom of why she is still sick. I hope this helps and I wish Pia the best!

My dog 9 yrs old had her pyometra surgery on 9 July n she is still passing this discharge.is it normal?she is not interested in food but not off her food.
No, that is not normal. She should be put on broad spectrum antibiotics. There may be an infection in the uterine tissue that is remaining in the abdomen (stump pyometra). A second surgery may be needed to remove the infective tissue. The bloodwork shows a high white blood cell count indicating infection. Some of her liver enzymes are mildly elevated but I don't think they are significant at this time. She needs to be evaluated for a stump pyometra. I don’t think she is depressed. I think she is probably sick. I worry about a uterine infection called a pyometra. It is a pus filled uterus. It doesn’t happen often just after pregnancy, but it can. If this is her problem it is life threatening without surgery. I would encourage you to take her to your local humane society or city shelter as often they will provide low cost or even free spay and neuter. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. I do recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. Her incision appears to be healing well. I do not see redness, swelling or discharge draining out. However, pictures can be deceiving. I am more worried that she is not eating. The diarrhea needs to be addressed as well. The veterinarian will examine her and take her temperature. A fever, for example, can indicate an infection. If you stopped her medications, which is reasonable given the diarrhea, she may be very painful now though. This too can affect appetite. The veterinarian will guide you on any testing or treatment options. In the meantime, keep her quiet, encourage her to drink so she doesn't become dehydrated and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. Hello. If this is her second episode, you should really consider having her spayed. Unfortunately, she may just continue to have these infections & each time they may get a little worse. You certainly should have her seen by your veterinarian now to restart antibiotics, but in the long run, she will be healthier getting that uterus out of her. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Poor Maisie. It's not normal that she has lost weight and has had some bouts with vomiting. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what is going on, but one concern I would have is a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment and can cause the symptoms you are seeing. I think it would be best if you take her into a vet immediately to get checked out. The vet can do blood work, urinalysis, and possibly an abdominal x-ray to see what is going on with her. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment.
