My dog's leg hurts. Can I give her human pain meds like paracetamol?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alaskan Malamute | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 77 lbs

My Alaskan Malamute female has strained her back legs we think running down the stairs too quickly. She finding it hard to stand up off the floor. She does seem to now be in some discomfort. Would it be ok to administer at home a very small dose of paracetamol to ease pain until attending the vets preferably tomorrow.

Please do not give Luna any paracetamol. It contains acetaminophen which has a very narrow margin of safety and can be toxic to dogs. Unfortunately many human pain relievers are toxic to dogs, and it's not recommended to give to them. Getting her into the vet tomorrow is the best idea, and I would rest her until then. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to potty on a lead only and bring her right back in when she's done. If she is having trouble standing up, help her when she gets up. Good luck!

Poor Missy! Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, and the vet can prescribe some for her.
