My male dog has a hard, red bump near his penis. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bedlington Terrier | Male | unneutered | 11 lbs

Hi! Around 3 months ago I catched my dog Balder from the streets after running out on the countryside. He is estimated to be around 1 year old maybe a bit less. About a week ago I noticed a small bump next to his penis (but no attached to it) which I thought was the thing that swollens up when the dog is excited, but it's there 24/7 and during the last day it's like if it has turned a bit and starting to seeking out. The end is red now, wasn't before. The bump is hard. Do not seem like it hurts

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an infection site. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
