My dog has a hard, painful bump on her snout. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 7 years old | 51 lbs

My 7 year old Golden retrevier woke up this morning with a bump on the outside of her snout, only on one side. Its hard to the touch and she is still eating but it does seem to maybe pain her a bit as she doesnt want me to touch it. Could it be an insect sting or something she ate? inside of her mouth seems fine

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an abscess or an insect bite though it is hard to know without an examination. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
