Is my vaccinated dog safe from a parvo puppy? Can I foster more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | 10 lbs

I have a dog, Susie who is UTD on shots. If I get a foster puppy that had parvo on 8/19 but got fluids and is eating and pooping all normally- is my dog safe to be in contact with that dog? Also, can I have the puppy poop outside where my dog does? And, if I have this puppy, will I have to stop having unvaccinated puppies in my house (fosters) and for how long. Sry for all questions, but I appreciate the help!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dogs that have had parvo can shed it for 2 months. If your dog is properly vaccinated and up to date she SHOULD be fine. The vaccine is very good if the dogs immune system responded appropriately. I would walk them in different areas. You could also have a parvo titer done on Susie to be 100% she is protected. You can continue to foster unvaccinated dogs. But I would wait 4 months and be sure everything this dog contacted is either thrown away or cleaned with bleach. Good luck!
