My dog is withdrawn, hiding, trembling. Is he sick or anxious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 50 lbs

My dog has a change in behavior that has progressed over the last 2 months. He is withdrawn and “hides” under the desk all day every day and only ventures out to eat once a day when he normally eats twice a day. When I take him out to relieve himself it’s a struggle. He bolts back for the door. I’ve have caught him trembling and shivering. He even does it when I call his name. He’s 5 years old.

I am so sorry to hear about George! I would recommend having your vet examine him to ensure there isn't a medical cause for his problem, such as pain or discomfort. If they find nothing wrong, you can discuss with them changes in your household or schedule that could be triggering anxiety/fear. There are some over the counter products for anxiety such as Adaptil (a pheremone product) https://www.adaptil.com/us/Products/ADAPTIL-Calm-On-the-go-Collar and calming supplements such as Composure and Solliquin http://www.solliquin.com/ that can help milder cases of anxiety. If these are not enough your dog may require prescription medication.
